Snippet of my research on piezoelectric  material, aka material producing electricity when force is applied to it. Materials for this research were organic peptides that were grown in a clean room condition. Peptide growths produces crystals in various directions, and these crystals produce said power! So, as long as the crystals were parallel to each other, highest power output can be expected.

I also did a multi-layered peptide, think of crystal on crystal. The power output ended being 30% higher than single-layered one. All of the data was acquired to LabVIEW.
